Designers and builders have pinpointed interior trends they say will inspire homeowners to redesign and redecorate room space this year. Since the kitchen is among the most popular rooms in the home, we’re unveiling the top trends in that area for 2020. From planning the kitchen layout to accommodate appliances and well-organized storage spaces, to incorporating design elements, including classic woodworking, popular pantones, and decorative backsplashes, we’re looking forward to seeing the new trends emerging during the construction of custom-built Signature Homes this new year.
Welcome to the Dark Side
The light and airy farmhouse kitchen has been hot for quite some time, but we’re seeing that trend cool down in the new year. Designers are trading in white and eggshell tones for dark, daring hues like forest green and deep blue. This lines up perfectly with Pantone’s newly announced 2020 Color of the Year, Classic Blue. Dark wall color choices play well with two-tone kitchens and calming color schemes. Patterns are also making a comeback in flooring to accent the room. Expect to see statement tiles used on floors, similar to how they are often presented in backsplash design.
Creative Storage Space
Designing a kitchen to accommodate storage space is now more important than ever. In 2020, you’ll find tons of creatively constructed storage areas in kitchen design effective in hiding appliances and freeing up space. This allows more versatility with the kitchen color palette, eliminating the need to coordinate the room design with an appliance color, like stainless steel, for instance. Kitchen larders will also have a tremendous influence on this movement. These storage spaces are essentially pantries set up to function as a refrigerator without the temperature control.
Making a Statement
Every 2020 kitchen will have an eye-catching statement piece. Brass will play a prominent role in kitchen cabinetry and as a selection for sink faucets, spigots, and fixtures. Colorful stovetop ranges are also emerging as a unique statement piece, and we’re not only pointing to navy blue or deep green. These popular 2020 kitchen appliance colors include bright yellow, orange, and even pink.
Out of the Box
There are a few eclectic and unusual trends hitting the kitchen scene in 2020 as well. You may start to see living room furniture being used in kitchens to give the space a more comfortable feel, as well as a rebirth of retro tiles for backsplashes. Wood has consistently been a timeless kitchen trend, but 2020 is upping the ante. Say goodbye to dark stain and light airy woods, and hello to old fashioned wood finishes, like the example pictured left.
