The Lehigh Valley offers a taste of France with both savory and sweet crepes and more ways than one. Crepes are very thin pancakes. The word, like the pancake itself, is of French origin, deriving from the Latin crispa, meaning “curled.” While crêpes originated from Brittany, a region in the northwest of France, their consumption is nowadays widespread in France and is considered the national dish. As far as great crepes to try, go for an all time favorite of nutella and banana served inside the crepe but the traditional crepe served with a simple powdered sugar on top is fine as well. Today everything is served inside of a crepe including ham and cheese and mushrooms.
The creperie making their tasty debut include 187 Rue Principale (Nov. 18), a 50-seat restaurant also serving other French fare such as duck breast and pan-fried rabbit at 187 Main St. in Emmaus; Crepe Soleil at the Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley; Cachette Bistro & Creperie at 504 Main St. in Bethlehem; and Vava’s Creperie Cafe at 2362 Catasauqua Road in Bethlehem.
Crepe Soleil even offers glutten-free crepes.
